Private and NGO provision of schooling

Intervention group:

This category covers interventions that involve non governmental actors in the provision of schooling. Such programs may aim to increase parents’ and students’ choice, provide supply of schooling when there is none, or improve the quality of education provided. Private schools may be run by profit, or by non-profit or faith-based organisations and there are a range of different mechanisms implemented to facilitate access to private education and school choice for children from poorer households. For instance, school vouchers help finance school tuition fees through payments made by the government to a parent or to a school chosen by the parent.
